
Australian Mining Firm Expands into U.S. with Major Underground Operations Deal
In a significant move marking its inaugural foray into the U.S. market, Barminco, the underground mining division of Australia’s Perenti Ltd., has secured a three-year contract valued at approximately $73.8 million with Nevada Gold Mines for the development of the Nevada Gold Mine Project at Goldrush. This contract reinforces Barminco’s commitment to expanding its footprint in North America while enhancing its expertise in large-scale underground mining operations.
Strategic Expansion into North America
This contract represents a major step in Barminco’s strategic growth within the North American mining sector. Perenti’s Managing Director and CEO, Mark Norwell, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “Securing the Goldrush underground project is an excellent achievement by our Barminco North America team.” The Nevada Gold Mine Project is expected to solidify Barminco’s presence in the region and position it for further expansion opportunities.

Goldrush Project Overview
The Nevada Gold Mine Project, located within the Cortez Complex near Beowawe, Nevada, is a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation (61.5%) and Newmont Corporation (38.5%). Production is set to commence in 2024, with an initial output of 130,000 ounces of gold, eventually scaling up to approximately 400,000 ounces annually by 2028. The project is anticipated to generate around 500 jobs during construction and 570 positions once fully operational, reinforcing its significant economic impact on the region.
Barminco’s Role and Expertise
Under the terms of the contract, Barminco will be responsible for underground development and ground support services over a 36-month period, commencing in February 2025. By leveraging its existing fleet for the Nevada Gold Mine Project, the company aims to minimize new capital expenditure while ensuring operational efficiency.
Previous Collaborations and Future Prospects
This is not Barminco’s first venture with Nevada Gold Mines or its stakeholders. Since 2019, the company has contributed to underground development at Barrick’s Hemlo gold mine near Thunder Bay, Ontario. In 2021, it also assisted with the Red Chris gold-copper operation in British Columbia, operated by Newmont. The Nevada Gold Mine Project marks a pivotal moment in Barminco’s North American expansion, reflecting its growing reputation in the region.
As the Nevada Gold Mine Project progresses, it is set to become a cornerstone of Nevada’s mining industry, driving local employment and economic growth.
