In a strategic move to enhance resource recovery, a South African gold mining operation has successfully utilized Grindex Bravo 500 slurry pumps from Integrated Pump Technology to reprocess gold-bearing slurry from its return water dam. This dam, which had stored process water for over 12 years, was identified as a valuable source of gold-bearing material during a period of underground maintenance that temporarily halted direct production. By transferring slurry from the dam to the gold processing plant, the mine sustained its production.
Pumping Dense Slurries: The Grindex Bravo 500 Solution
Reprocessing the slurry presented a challenge due to the material’s high density, which had a specific gravity (SG) of 1.38. JD Nel, Key Accounts Manager at Integrated Pump Technology, noted that while the slurry’s density was high, it matched the material already being processed in the plant, requiring no modifications.
The Grindex Bravo 500, a centrifugal pump designed for heavy-duty applications, was chosen after a comprehensive site assessment. “We had no concerns specifying the Grindex Bravo 500 because we knew it could handle the material’s density while maintaining the required flow rate,” Nel explained.
With a flow rate of 480 cubic meters per hour (m³/h) and a head of 18 meters, the Bravo 500 pumps were essential for efficient slurry movement. A total of three pumps were deployed, showcasing their capability to meet the high demands of the mining operation.
Robust Design for Mining Conditions
The Grindex Bravo 500 is engineered to withstand the abrasive nature of dense slurries, with components such as the impeller and liner designed for durability. The impeller’s design plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient slurry movement, reducing the risk of blockages, and ensuring smooth operation—particularly important given the high viscosity and density of gold slurry, which can cause issues in less robust equipment.
Nel highlighted the pump’s ability to handle high head pressures, crucial for transporting slurries over long distances or lifting them vertically. The pump’s consistent pressure ensures that dense slurries move effectively through the system. Additionally, the Bravo 500’s construction, including heavy-duty bearings and a robust shaft, enables it to manage the stresses of pumping demanding materials.
Operational Efficiency and Cavitation Mitigation
One major risk in pumping dense slurries is cavitation—a phenomenon where vapor bubbles form in the liquid being pumped, leading to equipment damage and reduced efficiency. The Grindex Bravo 500 is designed to minimize this risk, improving both the pump’s longevity and its operational reliability. This is crucial in reprocessing gold-bearing slurry, where downtime could lead to significant production delays.
In addition to handling dense slurry, a Grindex Bravo 500 was also used to pump clean water from the return water dam to the plant. This water was used to wash any remaining material back into the system, further optimizing recovery.
Sustaining Production and Resource Recovery
The deployment of Grindex Bravo 500 pumps underscores their effectiveness in handling high-density slurries in mining, providing a robust solution for challenging conditions in gold reprocessing. “The pumps facilitate the reprocessing of valuable slurry while demonstrating the operational efficiency and reliability Grindex pumps bring to the mining industry,” Nel noted.
For the South African gold mining operation, this approach not only maintained production during underground maintenance but also highlighted the importance of leveraging existing resources—such as the slurry in the return water dam—to optimize recovery and reduce waste.
By deploying Grindex Bravo 500 slurry pumps, the South African gold mining operation transformed a process water dam into a valuable resource, sustaining production during downtime and optimizing the recovery of gold-bearing slurry. The pumps’ robust design, ability to handle high-density slurries, and mitigation of cavitation risks were key factors in the project’s success. This reprocessing initiative demonstrates how innovative pumping technology can enhance both operational efficiency and resource recovery in the mining industry.
