We’re staring down a global supply crisis that makes 2019 look quaint. China controls 85% of rare earth processing, lithium prices are through the roof, and every defense contractor in America is sweating bullets about supply chains. Suddenly, that giant ice sheet sitting on untapped mineral wealth doesn’t look so remote anymore.
The 2019 Playbook Gets a 2026 Upgrade
Remember when Trump first floated buying Greenland? Denmark’s PM called it “absurd.” Everyone laughed. Fast forward seven years, and those laughs are getting nervous. The geopolitical landscape has shifted dramatically since then.

The Economic Reality Check
But here’s where the Trump enthusiasm hits Greenlandic reality: extracting these minerals isn’t a simple invasion scenario. The logistics are insane. But acquisition isn’t necessary to achieve these goals. Greenland is already willing to strengthen mining partnerships with the United States. The 2019 cooperation agreement on energy and mineral development remains active. Greenlandic officials have repeatedly signaled openness to expanded American investment in mineral extraction.
The real question is whether Trump’s team understands this nuance. Cooperative development through existing frameworks could deliver mineral security without triggering international incidents. Heavy-handed acquisition attempts could backfire, pushing Denmark toward European partners and complicating Arctic relations for decades.

The rare earth angle is real, but it’s not about invasion – it’s about influence. America wants guaranteed access to Greenlandic minerals without depending on Chinese goodwill or European political stability. That’s achievable through investment partnerships and long-term supply agreements.
