Resolute Mining acquisition of the Doropo and ABC gold projects in Côte d’Ivoire marks a transformative move for the Australian miner. The $150 million deal with AngloGold Ashanti positions Resolute as a stronger force in West Africa’s competitive gold mining sector and reinforces its strategic focus on politically stable jurisdictions.
Strategic Rationale Behind the Resolute Mining Acquisition
The Doropo project, located in northeastern Côte d’Ivoire, is in the definitive feasibility study (DFS) stage and is the crown jewel in the Resolute Mining acquisition. With proven and probable mineral reserves of 1.88 million ounces of gold at an average grade of 1.53 grams per tonne, it is projected to become a cornerstone asset. The 2024 DFS outlines an open-pit operation producing 167,000 ounces annually over a ten-year mine life. The project’s estimated all-in sustaining cost (AISC) is $1,047 per ounce, placing it in the lower half of the global cost curve.
Financially, the Doropo gold project offers strong fundamentals. The DFS points to a post-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 34% and a payback period of just over two years, assuming a gold price of $1,900 per ounce. Resolute plans to enhance project economics by aligning pit designs with its internal gold price assumption of $1,950 per ounce, integrating diesel power contingencies, and adjusting for updated 2025 infrastructure costs. A final investment decision is expected by the end of 2025, with construction to follow over a two-year timeline, targeting first gold by mid-2028.
ABC Project: Exploration Potential with Strategic Upside
Included in the Resolute Mining acquisition is the ABC Project, located in northwest Côte d’Ivoire. This early-stage, greenfield exploration asset spans approximately 1,143 square kilometers and hosts an inferred resource of 2.16 million ounces of gold at an average grade of 0.9 grams per tonne. While still in its infancy, ABC provides valuable exploration upside and a pipeline for long-term growth. Notably, a 2% net smelter return royalty and a $10 million success-based payment will be triggered if future studies confirm reserves of over 1 million ounces.
Expansion Strategy and Geopolitical Rationale
The Resolute Mining acquisition aligns with the company’s three-pillar strategy: expanding resource inventory, diversifying jurisdictional exposure, and increasing production scalability. Côte d’Ivoire is viewed favorably for its mining laws, permitting processes, and supportive government, making it a logical destination for further investment.
The acquisition also includes Resolute’s exit from Guinea. It is divesting its Guinean subsidiary to AngloGold Ashanti, transferring all existing exploration permits. If the transfer is not completed within 18 months, a $25 million cash settlement will be paid to AngloGold.
Financing and Outlook
The development of both Doropo and ABC will be funded through a combination of Resolute’s cash reserves and new debt facilities. A project financing initiative is underway, tailored to minimize shareholder dilution. According to CEO Chris Eger, the Resolute Mining acquisition “marks a transformative step in our strategy to become a leading West African gold producer.” He added that the addition of a third jurisdiction solidifies operational risk management and creates a more robust production base.
With Doropo projected to lift annual production above 500,000 ounces and ABC poised to deliver future resources, this acquisition reaffirms Resolute’s commitment to disciplined growth and shareholder value creation.
