US Gold Corp. (Nasdaq: USAU) reached a pivotal milestone on Monday with the approval of its air quality permit by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ). This approval satisfies the final condition tied to the mine operating permit for its CK Gold Project, bringing the company closer to establishing Wyoming’s next producing mine.
The CK Gold Project, located just outside Cheyenne, is expected to contribute significantly to the state’s mineral output, with production forecasts indicating substantial returns over its 10-year lifespan.
Clearing Regulatory Hurdles
The air quality permit marks the third and final requirement for the CK project’s operational permit, concluding a lengthy approval process. Earlier this year, US Gold Corp. met two other critical requirements: the reclamation bond and the Wyoming Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WYPDES) permit.
Luke Norman, US Gold’s executive chairman, expressed the company’s readiness to move forward. “The fulfillment of this remaining condition positions the CK Gold Project to be Wyoming’s next producing mine, adding gold and copper production to the state’s resource portfolio,” he stated in a press release.

Resuming Prefeasibility Studies
With the regulatory process complete, US Gold Corp. is now focused on updating the prefeasibility study (PFS) for the CK Gold Project. Initially launched in 2022, this study was delayed to prioritize permitting and respond to market shifts caused by COVID-19 and other external factors.
The updated study, expected by late 2024, will expand upon the 2021 PFS, which outlined a strong financial case for the project. Key highlights from the 2021 PFS include:
- Average annual production: 108,500 ounces of gold equivalent, with higher output of 135,300 ounces during the first three years.
- Total production (10 years): 1.02 million ounces of gold and 248.8 million pounds of copper.
- Economic metrics: An after-tax net present value (NPV) of $266 million, with a 33.7% internal rate of return (IRR).
- Capital expenditure: $221 million, with an estimated payback period of just two years.
Strategic Shift and Historical Context
The CK Gold Project represents a strategic shift for US Gold Corp., which previously focused on exploration projects in Nevada and Idaho, such as the Keystone and Challis gold projects. These earlier efforts yielded limited success compared to the CK site’s promising potential.
Acquired from Energy Fuels in 2014, the CK site boasts significant measured and indicated resources, including:
- Gold equivalent: 1.58 million ounces.
- Gold: 1.11 million ounces.
- Copper: 280 million pounds.
This large-tonnage, gold-copper deposit positions the CK Gold Project as a cornerstone asset in US Gold Corp.’s portfolio.
Economic and Regional Implications
The CK Gold Project is poised to bolster Wyoming’s mining sector, diversifying a resource base historically dominated by coal and trona. The project aligns with rising global demand for gold and copper, especially copper’s pivotal role in renewable energy technologies and electric vehicle production.
Industry experts note that the project could drive regional economic growth through job creation and infrastructure investment. However, the company must address challenges, including cost management and commodity price volatility.
Next Steps
As the updated prefeasibility study nears completion, US Gold Corp. will enter a critical phase of project financing and stakeholder engagement. Successfully securing initial capital while navigating market risks will be essential to the project’s realization.
For US Gold Corp., the CK Gold Project represents a transformative opportunity, solidifying its commitment to operational excellence and positioning it as a leader in the gold-copper mining sector.
