Rio Tinto, a mining company, has made a notable move towards sustainability by building a solar power plant at its Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This development highlights the company’s dedication to decreasing carbon emissions and promoting using renewable energy.
Solar Power Initiative
The recently completed solar power facility comprises more than 6,600 solar panels, generating around 4,200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually. This output is comparable to the amount of electricity used by more than 1,000 homes in Canada. A solar plant has been installed to meet a significant portion of the Diavik mine’s energy requirements during summer. This move aims to decrease the dependency on diesel fuel, which has conventionally been used at the remote site.

The Impact on the Environment
Rio Tinto is implementing solar power to significantly reduce the mine’s reliance on diesel, substantially decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. This move is expected to save approximately one million litres of diesel annually and reduce emissions by about 2,900 tonnes annually. This project is in line with Rio Tinto’s overall environmental goals, which include their aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Advantages in Operations
In addition to the positive environmental impact, the solar power plant is anticipated to bring substantial operational advantages. Decreased reliance on diesel saves money on fuel transportation and storage and improves the energy security for the Diavik mine. This development is crucial to Rio Tinto’s integration of renewable energy solutions into its global operations.
Importance from a Strategic Perspective
Sinead Kaufman, the Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Minerals, highlighted the project’s significance, emphasizing its strategic value. She stated that the solar power plant at Diavik is a groundbreaking initiative that showcases its dedication to sustainable mining. Investing in renewable energy infrastructure will help us decrease carbon emissions and improve our long-term operational efficiency.
The Diavik mine, a significant player in the diamond industry, is scheduled to cease operations in 2025. Nevertheless, the solar power plant’s implementation showcases Rio Tinto’s commitment to creating a positive environmental impact and leaving a lasting legacy through its dedication to environmental stewardship.
