New battery-electric LHD machine and strategic acquisitions position Komatsu as a leader in underground hard rock mining equipment.
Las Vegas, NV – Komatsu Ltd. is showcasing its latest advancements in underground hard rock mining equipment at MINExpo 2024, revealing a series of innovative developments. The highlight of the exhibition is Komatsu’s first-ever battery-electric powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machine, the WX04B, designed specifically for narrow vein mines. This 4-ton LHD is paired with a 150 kW battery charger that eliminates the need for additional infrastructure, providing unprecedented energy efficiency and operational flexibility for underground mining operations.

Battery-Electric WX04B: Leading the Charge in Mining Innovation
The new WX04B battery-electric LHD, boasting best-in-class energy density, is engineered to deliver up to four hours of continuous operation on a single charge. Komatsu has also integrated a cutting-edge battery swap system that allows the WX04B’s batteries to be replaced at ground level—avoiding the need for complex and costly underground rigging.
In addition to its energy efficiency, the accompanying 150 kW charger is designed to work seamlessly with common mining power sources ranging from 400 to 1,000 VAC, without the need for an external transformer, streamlining the integration process.
New Additions from GHH Group GmbH
Further bolstering Komatsu’s lineup, the company is introducing two new machines from German manufacturer GHH Group GmbH—acquired in July 2024. These include the 15-ton WX15 LHD with a 9 m³ bucket capacity and the 45-ton HX45 mining truck, both designed to optimize three-pass loading cycles and maximize efficiency. The inclusion of GHH’s equipment marks Komatsu’s strategic push to expand its underground mining offerings.
Z3 Series Drill Jumbo and Bolter: Modular and Efficient
Komatsu also debuts its new ZJ32 medium-size class drill jumbo and the ZB31 bolter, designed to meet the evolving needs of underground mining operations. Built on a modular, universal platform, the Z3 series machines are engineered for increased productivity and reduced service costs. In the coming months, Komatsu plans to expand the Z3 lineup with battery-electric models and intelligent machine control options.
