Kavango Resources, a London Stock Exchange-listed mining company, has announced a significant breakthrough in its efforts to revolutionize gold mining in Zimbabwe. With a $13 million financing package secured, the company is poised to develop high-grade gold mining projects in the Matabeleland region, signaling a bold step forward in Zimbabwe’s mining industry.
This financial injection represents a vote of confidence from major stakeholders in Kavango’s vision of pioneering modern mining practices in a region with immense potential.
Hillside Gold Project: A Game-Changer for Gold Mining in Zimbabwe
Kavango’s flagship Hillside Gold Project, set to commence operations in 2025, exemplifies the company’s ambitious plans. Ben Turney, Kavango’s CEO, revealed that the first phase of exploration has already pinpointed two high-potential gold mines. One of these opportunities involves underground, high-grade mining, which the company plans to execute using a spiral decline—a method widely adopted in Australia but relatively novel in Zimbabwe.
“Spiral declines enable bulk mining of underground, lode gold systems,” Turney explained. “This is a relatively new approach in Zimbabwe, which we hope to pioneer. We’ve assembled a strong exploration and mining team in Bulawayo, and we’re excited to see what they can accomplish in the coming year.”
The Hillside Project also recently yielded promising results from initial Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) testing, which detected significant tungsten and other strategic elements. These findings underscore the broader mineral potential of the site, further justifying Kavango’s investment in the region.

Expanding Market Reach Through the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange
To solidify its footprint in Zimbabwe and enhance its role in gold mining in Zimbabwe, Kavango plans to list its shares on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX). This move aims to enhance the company’s visibility among local investors while diversifying its shareholder base. By pursuing a VFEX listing, Kavango signals its long-term commitment to Zimbabwe’s mining sector and its belief in the region’s untapped economic opportunities.
Modern Mining Techniques for Gold Mining in Zimbabwe’s Historic Region
Kavango’s entry into Zimbabwe’s goldfields represents a significant shift in how mineral resources are exploited in the country. The use of spiral declines and other cutting-edge techniques demonstrates the company’s focus on sustainability and efficiency. These methods aim to maximize yield while minimizing environmental impact, setting a new standard for mining operations in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland region, long recognized for its rich gold deposits, has historically relied on artisanal and small-scale mining operations. Kavango’s industrial-scale approach, coupled with modern technology, could transform the landscape of gold mining in Zimbabwe.
Broader Implications for Zimbabwe’s Mining Sector
The successful launch of the Hillside Gold Project could have far-reaching effects on Zimbabwe’s economy. With the country’s gold mining sector already contributing significantly to GDP, Kavango’s project has the potential to further bolster production levels while attracting additional foreign investment.
Earlier this year, Zimbabwe declared its intent to become a $12 billion mining economy by 2023. Kavango’s investment aligns with this national goal and highlights the growing appeal of Zimbabwe’s mining sector to international stakeholders.
However, challenges remain. Zimbabwe’s mining industry has faced criticism over regulatory hurdles, lack of infrastructure, and transparency concerns. Kavango’s entry, coupled with its adherence to global best practices, could serve as a catalyst for broader reforms and improvements across the sector, particularly in gold mining in Zimbabwe.
A Pioneering Step Forward in Gold Mining in Zimbabwe
Kavango Resources’ $13 million financing marks a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe’s mining sector. By combining modern mining methods with a commitment to local market engagement, the company stands poised to unlock the full potential of the Matabeleland region. If successful, the Hillside Gold Project will not only enhance Kavango’s standing in the global mining community but also serve as a model for sustainable and efficient gold mining in Zimbabwe.
With the support of its robust financial backing and a skilled local team, Kavango is set to lead the charge in a new era of mining innovation in Zimbabwe. The coming years will determine whether its ambitious plans yield the transformative impact it envisions.
