
Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), the global metals and mining conglomerate, has launched a sweeping mining digital transformation across its operations in Kazakhstan, marking a first for the Central Asian nation. The company has deployed autonomous mining trucks and advanced AI systems to modernize its vast resource base, setting a new benchmark for Kazakhstan autonomous mining.
“This is about leading by doing,” said Shukhrat Ibragimov, ERG’s Group CEO. “The digital future of mining starts here.”
ERG AI Trucks Go Live at Vostochny Coal Mine
At the Vostochny open-pit coal mine, ERG has launched a fleet of driverless trucks that have already moved more than two million tonnes of rock. Powered by AI and monitored remotely via a private 5G network provided by Kcell, these ERG AI trucks have traveled over 68,000 kilometers and completed more than 17,000 unmanned trips.
Each autonomous vehicle is supervised by an operator stationed remotely. One operator can manage three trucks simultaneously, while a second engineer handles logistics and real-time diagnostics.
“It only takes two people now,” said Serik Shakhazhanov, CEO of ERG Kazakhstan. “And one of them used to be a truck driver who’s been retrained.”
The shift marks a seismic change in Kazakhstan’s mining industry, long reliant on labor-intensive, risk-prone processes.
AI-Powered Systems Push Mining Digital Transformation Further
In addition to autonomous trucks, ERG has introduced an AI-driven Manufacturing Execution System (MES) known as MES Alina. This system monitors over 7,000 live parameters and uses generative AI to produce performance reports and maintenance forecasts.
Deployed at multiple ERG facilities—including the Aktobe Ferroalloys Plant, Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter, and Krasno-Oktyabrskoye Bauxite Unit—the MES is already delivering results in cost reduction, uptime, and safety.
“These aren’t generic AI tools. They’re in-house solutions created by our tech subsidiary Business and Technology Services,” said an ERG official involved in the rollout.
Further deployments of the MES are scheduled for the Donskoy GOK and Sokolov-Sarbai iron ore complex by late 2025.
Kazakhstan Emerges as a Regional Mining Innovation Hub
ERG’s advances reflect Kazakhstan’s broader ambitions to become a regional leader in mining tech. With support from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, digitalization has become a national priority.
“ERG’s success could serve as a model for other resource-rich countries,” said Aigerim Tulepova, senior analyst at Eurasia Insights. “They’re showing that mining digital transformation is not just viable, but necessary.”
In a region where infrastructure gaps and labor risks have historically hampered productivity, Kazakhstan autonomous mining may serve as a catalyst for broader reforms.
Looking Ahead: Efficiency, Safety—and Questions
ERG aims to increase the volume of material moved by autonomous vehicles by 115 million tonnes by 2027. While the company touts improvements in safety and efficiency, questions remain over job displacement and community impact.
The company has launched retraining programs for former truck drivers, but observers are watching closely.
“There’s optimism, but there’s also skepticism,” Tulepova noted. “This needs to be inclusive transformation, not just automation.”
Despite the challenges, ERG’s strategy signals a major shift in mining economics—where data, precision, and AI are becoming just as important as geological assets.
