An autonomous international organization, the International Seabed Authority (ISA), has recently issued 31 exploration licenses. These licenses grant companies the opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of mining operations in international waters. The licenses encompass a vast expanse of over 1.3 million square kilometers, mainly situated in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) of the Pacific Ocean. This region is renowned for its abundant reserves of polymetallic nodules.

There are several companies leading the way in deep sea mining efforts. Canada’s DeepGreen Metals, now part of The Metals Company (TMC), has made remarkable progress in its exploration of the CCZ. Their goal is to extract polymetallic nodules that contain cobalt, nickel, and manganese. TMC’s recent merger with Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corporation (SOAC) has given them the financial support necessary to move forward with their plans.

Belgium’s Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR), a subsidiary of DEME Group, has also been involved in activities in the CCZ. A deep-sea mining prototype called Patania II has been developed by GSR. It aims to test mining technologies and evaluate their environmental impacts.

There is an increasing demand for a halt on deep sea mining, as countries such as France, Germany, and Costa Rica are advocating for careful consideration until thorough scientific evaluations are completed.
