Since 2016, Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR), an Australian-originated company, has been leading the way in harnessing this profitable resource. Originally established in Brisbane in 2013, CTR dedicated several years to the development of geothermal energy projects in the region. Through their work, they have successfully shifted their focus to harnessing the lithium-rich brines beneath the Salton Sea. This strategic move has the potential to greatly strengthen U.S. energy independence and decrease dependence on lithium-ion batteries primarily imported from China.

China is currently the global leader in lithium refinement, processing about 90% of the metal within its borders. The U.S. heavily relies on China for a significant portion of its battery needs, leading to imports worth $9.3 billion in 2022, as reported by the United Nations Comtrade Database. Developing domestic lithium production capabilities at the Salton Sea has the potential to change the current situation by providing a more sustainable and locally sourced alternative.

CTR’s method of lithium extraction is exceptionally environmentally conscious. Using geothermal brines, this process ensures a minimal environmental impact in comparison to conventional mining methods. The process entails harnessing superheated brine from beneath the earth’s surface to generate energy using steam turbines. An integrated lithium extraction process is then incorporated into this system, resulting in the recovery of lithium with a greatly reduced ecological impact.

This cutting-edge process has caught the interest of a wide range of stakeholders, such as California regulators, environmentalists, and the scientific community. The possibility of a clean, sustainable method of lithium extraction is in line with the broader objectives of safeguarding the environment and shifting towards renewable energy sources.
