
Anglo American’s decade-long pursuit of safer and more efficient underground mining has reached a major milestone, with all its steelmaking coal operations in Australia’s Bowen Basin now running simultaneously from Remote Operation Centres (ROCs). This achievement marks a significant step in the company’s “mine of the future” vision, integrating automation, data analytics, and digitalization to redefine underground coal mining.
Remote Operations: A Game-Changer for Safety and Efficiency
The implementation of ROCs has transformed Anglo American’s underground mining operations, enabling real-time decision-making while significantly reducing human exposure to hazardous environments. According to the company, this transition has already cut exposure risk in high-risk zones by 22,500 hours across its Bowen Basin mines.
Matthew Wakeford, Anglo American Australia’s automation superintendent, highlighted the transformative role of technology in modern mining.
“At Anglo American, we have re-imagined mines where our people can remotely manage operations from a safe distance, using real-time data to make informed decisions,” Wakeford said.
This shift aligns with global trends in mining automation, where companies are increasingly leveraging technology to enhance productivity and worker safety. Before Anglo American’s advancements, only one other mine—the San Juan Mine in the United States—had successfully implemented sustainable remote operations.
10,000 Longwall Mining Shears and Counting
Anglo American’s Central Queensland operations have now surpassed 10,000 longwall mining shears completed from ROCs, underscoring the effectiveness of remote-controlled operations. These advancements stem from more than 1,000 system initiatives aimed at overcoming technical and operational challenges over the past decade.
Matt Cooper, Head of Operations, emphasized the importance of balancing automation with human expertise.
“Each advancement towards our vision introduced new obstacles, requiring the development of further technology capable of meeting the unique demands,” Cooper said.
“But if we are to unlock the full potential of these advancements, we must consistently integrate the seasoned expertise of our workforce—those who have deeply understood and mastered the complexities of coal mining through decades of experience.”
Advancing Worker Safety with Automation
Anglo American’s push for automation extends beyond remote underground operations. The company has introduced industry-leading Personal Proximity Detection Systems to protect underground workers and is piloting remote-controlled dozers at its Capcoal Complex near Middlemount.
The Wi-Fi-enabled tele-remote dozers aim to reduce operator exposure to stockpile voids—a key safety risk. Once fully deployed across all sites, the initiative is expected to reduce in-cab dozer exposure time by 45,000 to 75,000 hours per year.
Wakeford described dozer automation as another significant leap in Anglo American’s autonomous mining efforts.
“Operating our fleet of dozers from a safe distance will reduce the number of hours in the cab and fully remove our operators from the dozer seat, marking another major advancement in autonomous mining,” he said.

Anglo American operates five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, alongside joint venture interests in manganese, base metals, and additional coal assets. The company’s investment in remote and automated mining technologies has positioned it as a leader in underground coal mining innovation.
“By developing state-of-the-art technologies and prioritizing the well-being of our workforce through a collaborative approach, our steelmaking coal mines in Australia have emerged as industry leaders, reshaping the future of underground coal mining on a global scale,” Cooper said.
